Box Score The Dolphins used a hot start in both halves today, weathering a would-be Brooklyn College comeback, to score a 80-69, CUNYAC victory this afternoon at the CSI Sports & Recreation Center. The Dolphins, winners of three-straight, improved to 3-1 overall and a perfect 2-0 in the conference, while Brooklyn College fell to 0-4, 0-1, respectively.
CSI wasted no time in setting the stage for a win, breaking open a basket-trading 2-2 tie, to take a 16-3 lead after the game's first six and a half minutes. Four baskets by sophomore
Javon Cox did most of the damage on the run, alongside a three-ball by junior newcomer Jonathan Chadwick-Myers. CSI duplicated the 13-point first-half lead on a pair of occasions, the last time at 10:48, when another Cox lay-up put CSI up 21-8, but from the there, Brooklyn sought to chip away, and the visitors were successful in doing so.
A quick, 8-0, run finished off with a Egzon Gjonbalaj three, cut CSI's ;lead to six, and later, at 6:59, a pair of Kevon Baker freebies cut CSI's lead to four, 25-21. With CSI mired in a cold shooting stretch, and with both Chadwick-Myers and junior
Dylan Bulger on the bench nursing foul trouble, BC cut the lead to a single digit on a Jerome Hayden fast break lay-up at 2:31, 31-30. CSI answered, however, as Cox powered to a lay-up after making a free-throw, and Chadwick-Myers then buried a long jumper to put CSI back up by six points, and the Dolphins would ultimately take a 36-32 lead into the lockers.
The halftime break served the Dolphins well, as the hosts again started the second stanza on a roll. A Bulger jumper gave the Dolphins an eight-point lead early, and after the Bulldogs cut the lead to three, 41-38, CSI went on an immediate 7-0 run, accentuated by a
Kevin King three-pointer to go up 48-38 with 15:38 to play. The Dolphins then used their best-run a couple of minutes later. Up 57-46 with 10:14 to go, the Dolphins ran off a 12-2 run, powered by a pair of interior baskets from Matt Van Manen and newcomer
Michael Tate.
The Dolphins took their biggest lead, 74-52, with 4:46 to go. From there, BC was able to end the game on a 17-6 run, ending the game on a Steven Grant three-pointer from just a few steps inside of half-court. Earning kudos for the Dolphins in the stretch was freshman
Khari Rollock, who with an injury to senior
Herschel Jenkins and foul trouble to Bulger, stepped in to play 24 quality minutes, never attempting a shot but scattering three assists and a pair of rebounds.
CSI, which shot a healthy 55.6% (30-54) from the floor, was led by Cox's 25 points and 13 rebounds. Chadwick-Myers was equally impressive, tallying 22 points and seven assists in 32 minutes. Van Manen added 15 points, eight rebounds and four assists. Baker led all scorers for Brooklyn with 27 points and five steals. Grant finished with 20 points. Gjonbalaj came off of the bench to post 10 points and a team-leading seven rebounds. CSI led the rebounding edge, 36-28.
The Dolphins will be idle until next weekend, when they face off against FDU-Florham at the Sports & Recreation Center at 1:00pm. The CSI women will also play next Saturday against NYU, at 3pm.
