Box Score 2 On a day when they would honor their four seniors, the College of Staten Island split a well-contested doubleheader against CUNYAC-rivals Baruch College played this afternoon at the CSI Baseball Complex in the final CUNYAC matchup of the regular season. CSI used 10 innings to get by the Bearcats, 2-1, in the opener, while Baruch exacted revenge with a 4-1 winner in the second game. CSI's records went to 18-15 overall and 8-4 in the CUNYAC, while Baruch extended to 18-16, 9-3, respectively, guaranteeing them the CUNYAC Regular Season Championship and the top seed in the postseason tournament that begins next week.
In the opener, the two teams battled through a pitcher's duel as CSI ace
Richard Anderson faced off against BC's Paul Perez. The two were terrific, as the duo allowed only five baserunners through the first six innings combined, while Perez worked on a no-hitter through the first six innings.
Ironically, CSI collected the game's first run, unearned, without the benefits of a hit.
James Lewis started by reaching on an error by BC first baseman Thomas Daly. Dan Lynch was next up and on his sacrifice bunt, Lewis, who was off and running on the play, charged around second and into third base. The throw to catch Lewis at third base was thrown wide to the left, and Lewis was able to go all the way home from first base on what should have been a routine sacrifice, giving the Dolphins a 1-0 edge.
But Baruch got even when they were down to their final three outs. The Bearcats started with back-to-back hits by John Yuksekol and Justin Torres, but Yuksekol was fired out trying to steal third base. Thommy DeJesus followed with another single, advancing Eric Peralta, who came in to pinch run for Torres, over to second base. Then the error bug caught CSI as a throw to first by third baseman
Henry Roman sailed high over the head of first baseman
Sal Todaro, allowing Peralta to score and knot the game at 1-1. Anderson was able to work out of trouble to bring the game to extra frames.
Once there, again the chances were limited, and Anderson yielded to reliever Mike Van Pelt, while Perez continued to go for Baruch. The game carried into the 10th inning, where again, CSI was able to scratch across an unearned run to win the game.
Bryan Moreno led off with a single and advanced to second on
George Kantzian's sac bunt. Kantzian still got on base due to an error, and then the duo stole bases, and Moreno came home when the throw to nail him at third base was a bad one by catcher DeJesus, giving CSI the walk-off, 2-1, win.
Perez was the hard-luck loser tossing 9 innings, allowing two runs (none earned) on five hits, fanning three. Van Pelt got the win with two innings of relief, while Anderson tossed eight frames, allowing one run (none earned) on seven hits, fanning eight. Baruch out-hit CSI, 7-5, but was plagued by six errors to CSI's two.
In the second game, BC was able to take the regular season title by frustrating the Dolphins at the plate, as this time Jesus Izarra did the honors. BC also protected in the field, allowing only one error while CSI committed four, as BC scored three of their four runs unearned.
Baruch took a 3-0 lead on CSI starter
Daniel Slevin in the fifth inning, aided by a pair of
Henry Roman errors. Daly added an RBI-single and Yuksekol added a two-RBI single for the inning's only hits, as Slevin was lifted for reliever
Kieran Monaghan.
CSI was able to get a run back in the fifth when Will Difede lined an infield hit to shortstop, scoring Roman, but they stranded Difede at third base to end the inning. Baruch took back the run in the seventh, but it hardly mattered, as Izarra was stellar down the stretch, retiring CSI's final six batters in order for the complete game win. Roman went 3-for-3 for the Dolphins in the losing cause, while Daly went 3-for-3 for the visitors.
CSI honored their four seniors pre-game with a rousing ceremony. Infielders
Sal Todaro and
Henry Roman and pitcher
Casey Mulligan were cited for their four years of service, while Joe Cassano was highlighted for his three years of play with the Dolphins.
CSI will complete a three-game set with Baruch tomorrow afternoon at MCU Ballpark at 12 Noon for a single, 9-inning game that will not count towards the conference standings.
