Box Score The College of Staten Island men's baseball squad won a hard-fought, 5-4, decision over conference rival John Jay College earlier today in a game that did not count toward the CUNYAC standings at MCU Ballpark in Brooklyn, New York. The game, the rubber match after yesterday's doubleheader split saw CSI lift their overall mark to 13-12, while John Jay fell to 7-22.
In the see-saw battle that came right down to the final frames, CSI built an early, 3-0, edge, touching JJC starter Corry Harper early. Aided by an error, CSI scored a pair in the top half of the first frame, as
Luis Ortiz came in to score the first run without the benefits of a CSI hit. Ortiz earned on via an error, and then moved to second after
Henry Roman was plunked. The duo moved up a base after a passed ball, and then a wild pitch thrown by Harper sent Ortiz in. Two batters later, Roman came in on an RBI-groundout by Will Difede.
CSI then loaded the bags in the second, again without a hit, this time thanks to a pair of walks and a hit batter. With CSI's Joe Cassano at third base, CSI did ultimately get their first hit, as Roman was able to beat out a thrown on a ball hit deep at shortstop. Harper was able to get out of the jam, as CSI left the bases loaded from there.
After only surrendering a pair of baserunners through five innings, CSI starter Mike Gillen finally got into trouble in the sixth, as the Bloodhounds finally got on the board. With runners at second and third, Freddy Rivera laced a single to score Justin Martinez. Joel Cabrera then followed with a sac fly to score Yahnny Arias. With two outs William Moran then followed suit with an RBI-double, scoring Rivera and knotting the game at 3-3.
Gillen was able to get out of the inning but then got touched again in the seventh. A Martinez up-the-middle single scored Leo Espinal, who pinch ran for Cosme Munoz, who opened the frame with a basehit. That prompted a change on the mound as
Anthony Storz relieved Gillen who pitched 6.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits, fanning three. Storz managed to retire the side, but not before JJC assumed control, 4-3.
Down to their final six outs, CSI needed a comeback, and got their turn in the eighth. The Dolphins opened with a Difede single, and the DH promptly stole second.
James Lewis then followed with an RBI-stroke down the leftfield line, scoring Difede. Lewis then stole second, and then moved to third on a long fly ball out by
George Kantzian. With one out,
Sal Todaro then recorded the key hit, a sac fly to deep leftfield, scoring Lewis and giving CSI back the lead, 5-4.

Storz was then exceptional in relief, earning the win for CSI by retiring the next six JJC batters in order to preserve the win. JJC out-hit CSI, 7-6 for the game, seeing two hits each from Moran and Martinez. CSI's only multi-hit game was registered by Difede, who went 2-4 with an RBI and a run scored.
CSI returns to action on Tuesday, when they travel to face Manhattanville College for a single non-conference contest at 4pm.
