The College of Staten Island kept their conference record untarnished, turning aside visiting Baruch College by a 6-3 count at the CSI Tennis Center this afternoon. The Dolphins improved to 8-1 overall and a perfect 5-0 in CUNYAC play with the win, while the Bearcats leveled to 4-4 overall and 3-2 in the conference.
CSI was flying high after doubles, nearly grabbing a clean sweep in the process. The No. 2 team of
Ilona Stoyko and
Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert were extremely sharp in an 8-1 win over BC's Jennafer Mukofsky and Amanda Naraine. One spot lower, the team of
Madiha Mulla and
Nozima Toshpulatova took a hard fought 8-5 contest over Jessica Duleba and Elizavetta Glotova.
The Dolphins were nearly successful at the top spot as well, but Bearcats duo Allie Jackson-Hing and Amandine Le Goupil-Maier proved a little too strong for CSI's
Sophia Varriano and
Jean Baak, as they were able to inch out an 8-6 win.
Still, CSI seemed well positioned in Singles, and were able to garner the win with four wins in six flights. All CSI winners won in straight sets, including a powerful, 6-0, 6-2, win by Mulla over Marianne Kogan in the No. 5 spot, and a well-earned, 6-0, 7-5, winner by Bragerton-Nasert over Mukofsky at No. 3.
Up next for CSI will be a big test against Brooklyn College on Thursday at 4pm in Brooklyn. The Dolphins and Bulldogs are both undefeated in CUNYAC play this season, and the match could hold legitimate postseason positioning implications.
