Box Score STATEN ISLAND, NY – It was an important weekend in CUNY conference play, as four teams were vying for the same position in the standings, the College of Staten Island being one of them. Thanks to some key saves from goalkeeper
John Gioeli and an offense that was able to capitalize on scoring opportunities, the Dolphins drowned Lehman College, 4-3, Saturday.
Â
With today's win over the Lightening, the Dolphins are the lone team in the conference to sit in fourth with a conference record of 3-3, 5-10-1 overall. The Lightening are now 5-10 overall, but are just 2-5 in CUNYAC play.
Â
Despite only getting four shots off in the first period, the Lightening were the first to get on the board, but not until nearly the 38
th minute when Momar Thiam chipped a corner pass to Hugh Campbell into the midfield where he took a hard shot into the net. This wasn't just the first goal of the game, but marked Campbell's first goal of the season.
Â
It didn't take long for the Dolphins to respond as a minute later
Thomas Vazquez fired a shot during a scramble in the box that fired back off a block, but
Daniel Tsygankov was there to return the ball and finding the back of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
Â
During the second period, CSI wasted no time taking control of the game as
Marcin Klim was able to head in the ball off a rebounded shot that was initially taken by
Alfonso Castaneda, around the 47
th minute. Minutes later, Castaneda finally got his own goal on the afternoon when he connected on a pass from Vazquez at the top of the box and sent the ball past Lehman goalkeeper Alejandro Romero into the back of the net. Castaneda's goals pushed CSI's lead to 3-1.
Â
The Lightening began to make a comeback, cutting the lead to just one at the 69
th minute when Campbell sent a pass into the middle of an open box, where Momar Thiam was then able to tap it into the goal. Scoring his second goal of the day was Tsygankov, who tapped a shot towards the goal which was initially saved by Romero, but the rebound hit the post and shot into the goal at minute 70.
Â
With less than two minutes to play, the Lightening took advantage of the lax play CSI when Ronniel Mendez was able to connect with Thiam and score on a 2-on-1 fastbreak, marking the last goal of the game.
Â
The Dolphins took 28 shots, 12 on goal, while the Lightening were only able to get 10 shots off, with seven of them being on goal.
Â
Both goalkeepers made incredible saves throughout the game. CSI's Gioeli registered four saves on the afternoon, while Romero tallied 8.
Â
