STATEN ISLAND, NY – The eight-game winning streak has come to an end for the College of Staten Island women's tennis team after the Dolphins fell to Ramapo College, 3-6, Sunday.
The match with the Roadrunners was original supposed to be played back on Sept. 12, but was postponed due to rain and rescheduled for Oct. 4 only to be pushed back again due to inclement weather.
During doubles play, Ramapo took the No. 1 and No. 2 games before
Madiha Mulla and
Nozima Toshpulatova were able to put CSI on the board after defeating Katrina Biss and Micala Demchak, 8-5.
In singles play, the Dolphins dropped both their No. 1 and No. 2 singles as
Sophia Varriano fell, 1-6, 1-6 at the one-spot and
Ilona Stoyko fell, 4-6 and 3-6. With CSI down1-4,
Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert won a critical match at the No. 3 spot, defeating Stephanie Abrecht, 3-6, 6-0, 6-4, to bring the score to 2-4.
The match between Demchak and
Jean Baak was a close one, but Demchak was able to take the match with scores of 6-4 and 7-5; while teammate Biss defeated
Madiha Mulla at the No. 5 spot, giving Ramapo the edge of 5-3.
To round out the day, Toshpulatova was able to defeat Maegan Heaney at the No. 6 slot with scores of 7-5 and 6-3.
Staten Island returns to action Tuesday, Oct. 22 at the National Tennis Center in Flushing, NY for the CUNYAC Semifinals.
