Box Score STATEN ISLAND, NY – It was a cold and blustery day out at the CSI Soccer Complex, as the College Staten Island women's soccer team took on SUNY-Old Westbury. While both teams struggled to get in the groove, the Panthers pulled away in the second half, spoiling the Dolphins undefeated season, as CSI fell 1-3, Friday.
It was a tale of two halves, with the first belonging to Staten Island. At the 35
th minute of play, the Dolphins were able to break through the OW defense as
Melissa Gelardi took a corner kick for CSI and connected with
Senda Karagozler in the box as she kicked the ball towards goalkeeper Caitlin Thomas. Although Thomas made contact with the ball in attempt to make the save, it bounced off her hand and rebounded into the goal, putting Staten Island up 1-0 heading into the half.
While CSI dominated the first half, it was the Panthers who took charge in the second. Just eight minutes after intermission, JoAnna Kettell broke through the Staten Island defense and delivered a pass to Stephanie Maybie to knot the game in tie at 1-1. Just five minutes later, Maybie registered her second goal of the contest on a pass she received from Michelle Ventimiglia from the top of the box, giving OW the 2-1 edge.
The final score of the game came at the 85 minute mark as Maybie tipped a pass to Kettell, sending it straight to the back of the goal and bringing the final score to 3-1 in favor of the Panthers.
CSI registered 12 shots, with six being on goal, while OW tallied 15 total shots and eight shots on goal. Both teams notched five saves on the day, with the Dolphins' goalkeeper
Victoria Donegan posting five, in comparison to the four by OW's Thomas and one team save.
Staten Island returns to action Saturday at Brooklyn College in it's final conference game of the season.
