The College of Staten Island women's tennis team continued its torrid run through the CUNYAC, winning their sixth straight conference contest against no losses, via a 7-2 win over previously undefeated Brooklyn College on the Bulldogs' campus this afternoon. CSI improved its overall mark to 9-1 in the process taking their third straight win. BC fell to 8-1 overall and 4-1 in the CUNYAC with the loss.
Despite the lop-sided final score, it was a close match from the get-go, beginning with doubles play. BC's top team of Yuliya Orkis and Suraya Maenhout was able to snag a heavy-handed, 8-2, win over CSI's top team of
Sophia Varriano and
Jean Baak, but the Dolphins capitalized with two decisive and gritty wins in the Nos. 2-3 spots. At No. 2,
Ilona Stoyko and
Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert used every inch of skill to narrowly defeat BC's team of Ekaterina Mospenova and Rosalia Xue, by a slim, 9-7, margin. In the No. 3 spot, CSI's duo of
Nozima Toshpulatova and
Madiha Mulla stayed hot in doubles, winning by an identical 9-7 score against BC's Maria Sanz and Gianna Gelosi.
Singles was where CSI did shine brightest; however, taking five of the six flights, but many came with a fight. Orkis continued her domination in CUNYAC with a win at No. 1 for Brooklyn, but from there, CSI was able to sweep the flights. Bragerton-Nasert was brilliant in a 6-2, 6-0, winner at No. 3 against Maenhout, as was Toshpulatova with a 6-0, 6-1, faring over Olayinka Sarayi at No. 6.
Mulla won in straight sets at No. 5 by a harder-fought, 6-4, 6-4, count, essentially sealing the win for the Dolphins. The other two flights were battles, but went in CSI's favor. At No. 2, Stoyko was able to best Mospenova, winning the first set 6-3, before using a tiebreaker to win her second set 7-6 (8-6). Baak, at No. 4, even with the match in hand, fought valiantly and was able to score a 6-3, 6-7 (5-7), 10-8, win over Sanz in a great singles match.
With CSI's record in the conference unblemished, the squad appears poised for what could be a run at the CUNYAC Regular Season title, needing a win in its final CUNYAC test against Lehman College on Saturday, October 12, to get the task accomplished.
?The Dolphins will be back in action, weather permitting, tomorrow afternoon at the CSI Tennis Center, where they will face Ramapo College at 4pm.
