The College of Staten Island women's tennis team made it four straight tonight, powering over the College of Mount Saint Mary as part of non-conference action in Newburgh, NY. CSI improved to 10-1 overall with the win, while the Knights fell to 2-8.
CSI's win was impressive, given that the team was forced to concede third doubles and sixth singles flights due to insufficient players. The match could have turned out differently, had CSI not been able to squeeze through some very competitive flights.
In Doubles, CSI was able to tie things up with two wins. The duo of
Nozima Toshpulatova and
Madiha Mulla pulled past Jillian Torre and Breanna Scott, 8-3, in the No. 2 spot, but things were heating up at the top, where CSI's team of
Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert and
Jean Baak were locked in a battle with Jaimee Lubniewski and Alissa Niad. CSI was able pull through thanks to a 7-5 tiebreaker in the 9th game, giving CSI a 9-8 win.
In Singles, two flights came down to third and decisive sets. In the pole position, Bragerton-Nasert held on to take a 7-5, 6-7, 10-8 win over Lubniewski, and three notches lower, Toshpulatova was a 6-2, 3-6, 10-4 winner over Scott. From there, CSI was successful in straight sets, as Baak (No. 2), Mulla (No. 3) and
Michelle Kushnir (No. 5) all earned wins.
Up next for CSI will be another non-conference date, this time on Friday, October 11, against Sarah Lawrence College, at 6:30pm.
