Box Score The College of Staten Island baseball squad won for the second time in less than 24 hours and their sixth straight overall, this time a 12-6 extra-inning win over William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey this afternoon. The Pioneers plated a run in the bottom of the 9th to tie the game and force extra frames, but from there, the Dolphins scored six runs in the 11th inning to march to the win. CSI improved to 11-7, while WPU fell to 10-4.
WPU struck first off of CSI starter
John Baggs, taking a 1-0 lead in the first off of a Trevor Haughney sac fly. But CSI scored twice in the second and another in the third off of Pioneers starter James Young to take a 3-1 lead, highlighted by a solo homerun by
Robert Bernardo, CSI's first homerun in nearly two years.
James Lewis would score in the second via a wild pitch to give CSI the lead, and then another infield single, plated
Chris Ramanauskas.
WPU would not stay down for long, and after cutting the lead to 3-2 after four innings, the Pioneers plated three runs in the fifth to grab the lead, 5-3, two of which came on wild pitches by Baggs.
With the game heading into the seventh, CSI rallied. Another hit by Bernardo, this time a single, plated Ramanauskas, and later a fielder's choice RBI by
Michael Milazzo earned Bernardo the trip home and tied the game at five. After CSI reliever
Robert Jannace pitches a scoreless bottom frame, CSI grabbed a critical 6-5 lead in the eighth when
Joseph Palmeri's infield stroke forced a throw home, but Lewis was ruled safe on the play and CSI had its 6-5 lead.
Again, the Pioneers refused to quit, and in the ninth inning the home team crept back in. With two outs and one man on, Vin Fondecaro stroked an RBI double, scoring a run and tying the game at 6-6. With Fondecaro at second,
Jonathan Aponte came in to pitch for CSI, and after hitting a batter to put runners at first and second, Aponte got Mike Arnold to fly out to center to end the threat.
CSI left two runners on base in the 10th, but they would make WPU pay in the 11th.
Joseph Cespuglia started with a single and was advanced via a Milazzo sac bunt. Lewis then singled for the third time in the game, moving Cespuglia to third.
Dan Lynch was then walked by WPU reliever Adam Miller to load the bases, and then the dreaded error caught up to the Pioneers, WPU committed seven on the day, and this time CSI capitalized heavily when
Bryan Moreno's routine hit to shortstop was booted, allowing Cespuglia to score the eventual game-winning run.
Joseph Palmeri followed with a bases-loaded walk, and Ramanauskas followed with a sac fly to give CSI a commanding 9-6 edge. Will DiFede then issued a huge blow with a two-RBI singe up the middle, and then Bernardo earned on via another WPU error, allowing another run, and just like that, CSI had the Pioneers doubled up, 12-6.
Aponte yielded a base hit in the bottom of the frame, but then retired the Pioneers in order to seal the win.
Both teams had 13 hits on the day, but CSI was errorless in the field while the Pioneers totaled seven errors, leading to a total of six unearned runs for CSI. Miller took the loss, tossing 3.2 innings of relief. Lewis finished going 3-6 at the dish with an RBI and two runs scored while DiFede, Bernardo, Cespuglia, and Lynch all finished with a pair of hits.
CSI will return to action tomorrow against St. Joseph's College of Brooklyn for a home doubleheader at 12 Noon.
