CSI MEN FALL HARD TO MIT IN OPENER, 6-1

Box Score The College of Staten Island men's soccer team showed flashes of excitement in the their season opener, but at the end of the day fell hard to visiting Massachusetts Institute of Technology by a 6-1 final as part of the 2nd Annual CSI Fall Classic at the CSI Soccer Complex.  The Engineers improved to 1-0 on the season while the Dolphins dipped to 0-1.

Starting eight first-year faces, the Dolphins were behind the eight-ball early, as 2012 MIT leading scorer Sean Bingham tallied just 4:11 into the game.  The sophomore turned on a Bokil Lopez-Pineda pass and pasted a point-blank shot passed CSI keeper John Gioeli, who made his CSI debut in net.

The Dolphins, however, got even rather quickly.  A feverish rush down the field sprung Alfonso Castaneda down the right sideline and his would-be crossing pass hit off an Engineer defender's hand and a penalty shot was awarded to the Dolphins.  Castaneda did the honors burying a shot in the low left hand corner against MIT keeper Jake Amereno at 9:13.  The tie score, however, was short-lived, as less than four minutes later, MIT rallied again to take the lead, this time when Austin Freel hammered home a loose-ball rebound on an original Bingham shot.  That made it 2-1 just 13:11 into the game.

From there, MIT was able to keep CSI relatively at bay.  The Dolphins showed flashes of offense, but the continuous pressure of the MIT attack kept CSI back-pedaling, and eventually Bingham would tally again with under 10 minutes to play in the half, this time after stealing a ball from just beyond the goal box and firing in a shot to make it 3-1 at intermission.

CSI pressed hard in the second half but MIT was able to weather the storm.  With less than 20 minutes to play, MIT added all the insurance it needed with another three goals.  Bingham completed his hat-trick at 70:49, and less than 9 minutes later Fernando Cunha tallied after just getting into the game via substitution.  Finally, with four seconds to play, reserve Joe Schuman added MIT's final goal against a reeling Dolphins team.

MIT out-shot CSI by game's end, 26-7 (13-4 on goal).  Bingham finished with three goals and an assist with four shots on goal.  Castaneda finished with two shots on goal for CSI, three total.  In defeat, Gioeli made seven saves for the Dolphins, while Amereno made three saves in his 79:29 between the pipes.

CSI will face New Jersey City University tomorrow afternoon at 4:30 in the final day of the Classic.  NJCU fell on Friday to Brooklyn College, 2-0.  MIT will face Brooklyn at 2:00pm.
