The College of Staten Island women's tennis returned home for a non-conference test against Kean University on Thursday, and scored their fourth straight win to open the season, toppling the visiting Cougars, 6-2, at the CSI Tennis Center. CSI ran their season-opening mark to 4-0, while Kean fell to 2-3 overall this season.
For only the second time this season, CSI took an advantage coming out of doubles, posting wins at the Nos. 2 and 3 flights. The first ones off the court was the pair of
Jean Baak and CSI newcomer
Nozima Toshpulatova, making her CSI debut at the No. 3 doubles position. They scored an 8-3 win in their flight, while one flight above them, the duo of
Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert and
Michelle Kushnir were rock-solid in an 8-2 win over Erin Hendricks and Brianna Martin, staking CSI to a commanding 2-0 edge.
In the top spot, it was a great battle between CSI's
Sophia Varriano and
Ilona Stoyko and Kean's Debra Dress and Jaelynn Lee. CSI grabbed an early game lead, but Kean took over the match, 5-4 and held the lead until CSI was able to tie, 7-7. From there, however, the Cougars had the better way of it, scoring a 9-7 win to get themselves back into the match.
When play headed into singles, CSI had control. The Dolphins took flights three through six, while only Dress was able to score a win for Kean. CSI's
Madiha Mulla played singles only and won her No. 5 flight by a 6-0, 6-1, count over KU's Martin. Meanwhile Toshpulatova made it a perfect two-for-two to start the season, defeating Zenzile Liggins by the same score.
CSI, which also boasts a 1-0 CUNYAC mark, will get back to conference play on Saturday, when they host perennial CUNYAC-power Hunter College at the CSI Tennis Center at 12 Noon.
