The College of Staten Island women's tennis team got back in the win column, shutting out visiting John Jay College by a 9-0 count in a match played earlier this afternoon at the CSI Tennis Center. CSI improved to 7-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play, while the Bloodhounds fell to 1-9, 1-4, respectively.
Play opened with doubles and CSI was crisp from the start. The top team of
Ilona Stoyko and
Nozima Toshpulatova got things started with an 8-3 win, and one rung lower,
Sabrina Bragerton-Nasert and
Madiha Mulla scored an 8-5 win over JJC's Lissette Caravantes and Armine Kurkjian. In the final spot,
Michelle Kushnir and
Jean Baak teamed up for CSI to score an 8-2 win over Jessica Melchiorre and Enida Morina.
When play switched to singles, CSI was able to sweep. At the No. 2 position, Bragerton-Nasert was crisp in a 6-0, 6-1, win while both Toshpulatova and Kushnir both scored 6-0, 6-0, wins at No. 5 and 6. Mulla was a 6-2, 6-0, winner at No. 4. Tougher matches were fought in the top spot and at No. 3.
In the top spot, CSI's Stoyko won the first set 6-3, before out-doing Kurkjian, 7-5, in the second set. Two spots lower, Baak was the final player off of the court. She won her first set over Enita Morina, 6-1, before Morina battled back to force a 7-5 second set, albeit in Baak's favor. That clinched the win for the Dolphins.
CSI is back in action on Tuesday, hosting Baruch College at the CSI Tennis Center at 4pm.
