Box Score The College of Staten Island men's basketball team opened up a tight first-half with a run that extended midway through the second frame, culminating in an improbable 38-0 run that resulted in an 81-42 win over visiting John Jay College at the Sports & Recreation Center tonight as part of CUNYAC play. The win, the 10th in a row for the Dolphins, lifted the team to 11-2 overall and 6-0 in the conference while the Bloodhounds fell to 6-9 overall and 4-4 in the CUNYAC. Along the way, CSI senior
Bloochy Magloire made history, tying the school's all-time three-point scoring title with 241 career three's with a trio of three's in the game's eventful first half.
The final score was hardly indicative of the game's first 11-plus minutes, as John Jay actually had themselves an 11-10 lead over the hosts. A Carl Ulysse jumper for JJC cut CSI's lead to 15-14 with 8:17 to go in the frame, but from there, it was all CSI and the team amped up its defense and suffocated the Bloodhounds with their high-intensity offense.
Jonathan Chadwick Myers got the run started, and Magloire then followed with his second three of the night. After a Matt Van Manen lay-up and a pair of Chadwick-Myers freebies, Magloire added a fast-break lay-in and then posted a trey, the one that tied Hall of Famer John Cali's record of 241 career three's after Chadwick-Myers buried a long ball, and before you could say, "Staten Island," the home squad had themselves a 32-14 halftime lead.
The Bloodhounds finished the first half misfiring on their last 15 shot attempts over the final 8:17, and then proceeded to miss their first seven shots of the second half, as CSI jumped out to score the first 21 points of the second half to build up an improbable 53-14 lead with 13:33 to go. A trio of baskets from
Dylan Bulger and Frankie Schettino powered the run. Later, a more modest 12-5 run gave the Dolphins their hugest lead, 74-27, with 4:31 to play. From there, the Dolphins had all of their reserves playing increased minutes and by night's end, 11 Dolphins had entered the scoring column.
CSI shot 59.3% in the game's second half, lifting their overall mark to 49.2%, holding their opponents to just a 20.3% clip, and holding a commanding edge on the boards, 51-35. In limited duty, Magloire led all scorers with 17 points in 24 minutes, adding three assists. Chadwick-Myers finalized with 12 markers, five rebounds, and four helpers. Bulger led all scorers with 9 rebounds. Leading the way for JJC was three-point specialist Antoine Long, who canned 4-of-9 three-pointers for 12 points.
The 42 points allowed by the Dolphins were the lowest since December 7, 1998, when CSI gave up an identical 42 points to York College. The win for the Dolphins also matched the most lop-sided win in the all-time series that dates back to 1978 spanning 60 games. CSI won by the same exact score back in the 1994-95 season.
CSI gets back to action in Friday, when they visit Hunter College for more CUNYAC action at 7pm in New York. CSI has won the last six games over Hunter, including all three meetings last year.
