Men's Swimming & Diving

DOLPHINS ROLL PAST BROOKLYN IN POOL

The College of Staten Island men's and women's swimming and diving teams were victorious in a big way this evening, soaring to victory over Brooklyn College on the road in Brooklyn, NY.  CSI won on the men's side, 159-61, in what was their season opener, while the women took a leaner 136-79 win in their second meet of the year.

It was a big night for CSI captain and reigning CUNYAC Most Valuable Performer Timothy Sweeney, who aside from sweeping his events set a new school and CUNYAC record in the 200-yard Freestyle with a time of 1:43.31.  In the young season it's already the 9th-fastest time in NCAA Division III and his time in the 100-yard Butterfly was seventh-highest in the NCAA Division III ranks this year.

On the women's side, the Dolphins took first place in 11 of 13 events.  Ewa Wojciechowska set CSI off right in the 1,000-yard Freestyle coming in at 11:41.65, part of two individual first place finishes for her.  Naomi Gaggi then followed with a win in the 200-yard Freestyle, and she would later score first again in the 100-yard Butterfly competition.

In one of the closest races of the night, Victoria Crea topped in the 50-yard Freestyle with a time of 25.84, defeating BC's Valerie Vassilieva by just 0.18 of a second.  After that, Samantha Escobedo won the first of three races on the night in the 200-yard Individual Medley, winning that by over seven seconds.  She later added a 30-second win in the 100-yard Backstroke and a 9-second win in the 100-yard Breaststroke.  Nouran Abualam would add a couple of first place finishes on the diving boards, scoring a 137.7 in 1-meter competition and 110.25 on the 3-meter platform.

In men's action, Sweeney joined Derek Villa, Jonathan Gorinshteyn, and Nick Defonte with two first-place finishes in individual events.  Villa took honors in the distance events, winning the 1,000-yard Freestyle by almost three full minutes.  Defonte took his two in the shorter, 50- and 100-yard Freestyles while Gorinshteyn added gold in the 200-yard Individual Medley and 100-yard Breaststroke.  Youssef Aly lent himself to a pair of first place finishes in relay events.

Both units will be back in the pool on Tuesday, November 8, when they host William Paterson University in a 6pm match at the Sports & Recreation Center.
