Box Score 2 The College of Staten Island men's baseball team officially began their season in Myrtle Beach, SC, and the Dolphins advanced to a pair of wins in the season-opening doubleheader. The Dolphins defeated Southern Virginia University by scores of 3-2 and 9-4.
The wins were especially impressive given that SVU had already played 15 games this season coming in. After the doubleheader, CSI is 2-0 this season while SVU fell to 6-11 overall.
GAME 1
In the opener,
Frank Sconzo got CSI on the board in the first inning. He started with a double, and then after being sacrificed over by
Bobby Drake,
Glenn Glennerster plated him via a groundout. CSI then went up 2-0 when
Chris Moran scored in the third on a Drake grounder. SVU would tie things up in the top of the fourth against CSI starter
Tom Musso, byt CSI would not surrender another run the rest of the way.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, CSI won the game
CSI gets right back on the diamond tomorrow when they face Muhlenberg College for a 12 Noon doubleheader. Two errors and a hit by pitch helped load the bases and with just one out, Sconzo was walked and
Josh Mercado scored in walk-off fashion to give CSI the win. The Dolphins were out-hit in the opener, 6-5. Musso went the distance in the win, surrendering two earned on six hits while fanning six.
GAME 2
A first inning double by
Bobby Drake got CSI on the board in the second game, scoring Sconzo, and later Drake came in on a stolen base attempt. Southern Virginia came back in the third to take a 3-2 lead scattering three hits against CSI starter
James Taunton. CSI came right back and put up three in the fourth, aided nicely by
Anthony DiMarco's two-run homer. Glennerster did the same in the fifth inning to make it 6-4, and
Jordan Wilson added a two-RBI triple in the seventh to break things open.
CSI out-hit SVU in the second contest 12-7. The top three hitters in the order (Sconzo, Drake, Glennerster) went a combined 6-12 with 3 RBI and 4 runs scored. Taunton went six innings for the in, yielding four runs on seven hits fanning four.
