Box Score 2 The College of Staten Island baseball squad followed up a doubleheader sweep yesterday with a split today, taking game one off of Muhlenberg College, 4-0, before falling in the second game, 9-4. The split leaves CSI with a 3-1 record after two days in Myrtle Beach, SC, while the Mules leveled to 3-3 overall.
GAME 1
In the opener, CSI used the arm of pitcher Christian Capellam to score a 4-0 win. The sophomore hurled all seven innings, yielding just six hits with no walks and four strikeouts. CSI got on the board in the third inning on a double steal attempt, successfully bringing John Pomerico home from third base.
Three innings later, CSI doubled their lead on a
Josh Mercado single that plated
Frank Muzzio, who led all Dolphins with two hits in the game. Muzzio's second hit was a two-RBI single that would score
Glenn Glennerster and Drake for the total scoring difference.
Sam Kasten took the loss for the Mules, tossing six innings, allowing two runs on three hits, walking three and fanning four.
GAME 2
Muhlenberg got even in the second game that was a lot more offensive. MU finally got on the scoreboard with three runs in the third inning spearheaded by a John Icaza two-RBI single off of CSI starter
Derek Jentz.
CSI got a run back in the fourth, but MU would add four more in the fifth to break the game opem, chasing Jentz in favor of reliever
Dan Newman, who then yielded to
Terrance Mulligan.
Down 7-1, CSI rallied back with three runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-RBI double from
Anthony DiMarco, but it wasn't enough, as Christopher Bunero tossed a 2.1 inning save, preserving the win for starter Ryan Kaverick.
CSI did out-hit MU, 9-7, in the secong game, as DiMarco went 3-3 with a walk in the game.
CSI will finalize their Spring Training trip at the Cal Ripken Experience tomorrow afternoon with their third straight doubleader, this time against Chatham University at 12 Noon.
