GAMEDAY: SOFTBALL BEGINS FOUR-GAME WEEKEND SLATE WITH DOUBLEHEADER AGAINST WEST CHESTER UNIVERSITY OF PENNSYLVANIA

3/18/2023 8:00:00 AM

West Chester, PA - The College of Staten Island Softball Team begins a four-game weekend slate this afternoon as they hit the road for a Saturday doubleheader against West Chester University of Pennsylvania.  The Dolphins enter today's games 4-8 on the season and the Golden Rams enter action with an 8-7 mark on the year.

The Dolphins were last in action on Thursday when they earned a split of their doubleheader against Holy Family University.  Game one saw the Dolphins build an early five-run lead that was trimmed down to one, but CSI was able to extend the lead up to six on their way to a 10-7 win.  In game two, the Dolphins fell behind early before a late rally came up one run short in a 6-5 loss.  Last time out, the Golden Rams wrapped up a trip to the Carolinas with a split of their doubleheader against Barton College on Wednesday.

It was a big day for Aileen Balderas on Thursday as she homered for the second time this season, reached base four times, and drove in three runs against the Tigers.  Her .355 average trails only Mariah Carcano in batting who leads the Dolphins with a .395 mark at the plate.  Alyssa Acosta is still hitting over the .300 mark as well and Rianne Mayer is now fourth on the team in hitting after a 3-6 outing on Thursday.  Elizabeth Moore also had a good day against Holy Family as well and is now tied with Anissa Acosta for the team lead with nine RBI's.  In the circle, Alexis Miramontes is coming off of a win after pitching four innings against the Tigers.  Alexandra Frenza provided strong relief in game one before lasting just one inning in her game two start.  Both come in with an ERA between 4.00 and 5.00 with each possibly getting another start today.

The Golden Rams are led in batting by three very dangerous hitters, Madison Melvin, Grace Aguilar, and Hailey Melvin.  Each is hitting above .390 and has an OPS over 1.000.  Madison Melvin and Aguilar are both hitting well above .400 and Hailey Melvin leads the team in slugging at .634.  As a team, the Golden Rams are hitting just over .300 with a staff ERA just north of 3.00.  Five different pitchers have earned a start for the Golden Rams this year.  Of those five starters, Makenzie Edwards leads the team in ERA and Samantha Klug leads the team in both wins and innings-pitched.
