GAMEDAY: SOFTBALL FACES ST. THOMAS AQUINAS IN THIRD STRAIGHT CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

3/30/2023 8:00:00 AM

Sparkill, NY - The College of Staten Island Softball Team will play their third consecutive conference doubleheader this afternoon when they face the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College.  The Dolphins enter today's games with a record of 8-16 on the season and a 2-4 mark against the East Coast Conference.  The Spartans come in 9-7 on the year and are 2-0 in conference play.  The Spartans hold a distinct advantage in the all-time series as they have won seven of the eight meetings between the two teams.

The Dolphins last took the field on Tuesday against Queens College in their second doubleheader in as many days.  In game one, the Dolphins suffered a 3-0 shutout defeat and in game two CSI fell to their CUNY rival 5-1.  The Spartans also last took the field for a conference doubleheader on Tuesday when they picked up a pair of decisive wins over Mercy College, 11-2 and 11-1.

Mariah Carcano has maintained a batting average well above the .300 mark all season and continues to lead the Dolphins in hitting.  Both Alyssa Acosta and Aileen Balderas are 21-68 on the season good for a .309 average that is tied for second on the team.  After a three-hit game in the second matchup with the Knights on Tuesday, Amelia Funston is closing in on a .300 batting average as well.  Anissa Acosta's 21 RBI's lead the Dolphins and keep her among the leaders in the ECC as well.  Four of the five most-used CSI pitchers come in with an ERA close to 5.00 with most of the starts going to Alexandra Frenza and Alexis Miramontes.  With an off day between Tuesday's doubleheader and today's games, the duo got some much-needed rest after pitching meaningful innings on consecutive days earlier in the week.

The Spartans are led in hitting by Sarah Williams who boasts a .359 batting average on the season.  Abbie Landrum is not far behind her at .343 and Elyse Marcano rounds out the top three hitters on the team with a .326 mark on the season.  Landrum is perhaps even better in the circle as she leads the Spartans in ERA.  On the year, Landrum and Carissa Della Vecchia have anchored a Spartans pitching staff that enters action today with a 2.09 ERA.
