GAMEDAY: SOFTBALL HOSTS RIVAL QUEENS COLLEGE WITH PLAYOFF HOPES ON THE LINE

4/18/2023 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Softball Team will look to keep their playoff hopes alive when they host CUNY rival Queens College this afternoon at 2 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's games 11-29 on the season and 3-11 against the East Coast Conference.  Queens comes into the CSI Softball Complex  7-27 on the season and 4-10 against conference opponents.  The Knights swept the Dolphins when the two teams faced one another earlier this season.  The two victories increased the Queens lead in the all-time series to 8-4.

The Dolphins last played on Friday in Buffalo against D'Youville University in another pair of important conference games.  After losing game one by a final score of 9-3, the Dolphins saw a three-run lead get away in game two which they lost 4-3.  The Knights had a chance to separate themselves from CSI in the standings on Sunday, but they were also swept by D'Youville and were shutout in both games.

The Dolphins only scored once last time they faced Queens in late-March, and the CSI offense has scored three runs or less in four straight games. Since the start of last season, the Dolphins have not scored more than two runs in a game against Queens, and the Dolphins are 1-5 against the Knights since that time.  In the first meeting of the season against Queens, the Dolphins had just two hits, but they bounced back with eight hits in game two.  Three of those belonged to Amelia Funston, and Aileen Balderas hit safely in both games.  Balderas is coming off a strong week in which she hit above .350 with a home run and three RBI.  Though the Dolphins have been tinkering with their pitching rotation as of late, look for Alexis Miramontes, Alexandra Frenza, and Anissa Acosta to all get work in the circle during today's two important games.

Ann Grimshaw had a huge day against the Dolphins last time these two teams faced one another finishing game two 3-4 with three RBI.  She is currently the second-leading hitter for the Knights trailing on Caroline Pescatore.  That duo accounts for the only two Knights hitting above the .300 mark and Queens is hitting just .236 as a team.  Allyson Dilday has been dominant for the Knights in the circle this season and has now surpassed the 100-inning plateau behind 13 complete games.  She picked up her only shutout of the season against the Dolphins earlier this year, and fellow starter Dyana Budakowski allowed just one run in another complete game against CSI last month.
