GAMEDAY: SOFTBALL FACES THE COLLEGE OF SAINT ROSE IN SECOND LEG OF BACK-TO-BACK

4/19/2023 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Softball Team faces the College of Saint Rose in the second leg of a back-to-back this afternoon at the CSI Softball Complex.  The Dolphins enter today's games 11-31 following a sweep at the hands of Queens College in yesterday's doubleheader.  The Golden Knights enter the CSI Softball Complex 9-24 on the season and defeated the Dolphins 4-3 when the two teams met earlier this season at The Spring Games.  The Dolphins lost that game following a costly error that allowed a pair of unearned runs to score and a late-game rally that fell one run short.

The Dolphins saw their playoff hopes take a major hit yesterday as they were swept in a conference doubleheader by Queens College.  After CSI tied the game one on an inside-the-park home run by Anissa Acosta, the Knights scored four unanswered runs to take the win 5-1.  In game two, the Dolphin bats failed to produce a run in a 3-0 shutout.  The Golden Knights last played on Sunday against American International College and earned a split of that NE-10 doubleheader.

Amelia Funston, Acosta, and Alyssa Acosta each ahd multiple hits against the Knights yesterday, but the CSI offense managed just one run in the two games.  Acosta also pitched very well in her game two start with four perfect innings to begin the game, but she didn't get any run support in the shutout loss.  Alexandra Frenza also pitched well for five innings in game one, but walks and pitch count caught up to her in the sixth.  The Dolphins also opened the door for a Knights rally with a critical error on the infield.  Frenza got the start last time the Dolphins faced Saint Rose earlier this season and allowed two earned runs in three innings of work.

Madison Chandler leads the Golden Knights in batting by a wide margin hitting at .387 on the season.  Alexandra Deeter, the team's second leading hitter at .289, had two hits against the Dolphins in the Saint Rose victory back in March.  Isabella Milazzo picked up the win in that game allowing two runs on just three hits in 5.1 innings.  She is the leader for the Golden Knights in most pitching statistics and has been their number one starter all season.
