SOFTBALL FACES ST. THOMAS AQUINAS IN PENULTIMATE CONFERENCE DOUBLEHEADER

4/23/2023 8:00:00 AM

Staten Island, NY - The College of Staten Island Softball Team plays the first of two conference doubleheaders remaining on their schedule as they take on the Spartans of St. Thomas Aquinas College this afternoon at the CSI Softball Complex.  The Dolphins enter today's games 11-33 overall and 3-13 in conference play.  The Spartans are 22-15-1 on the season and 9-4-1 against conference opponents.  Earlier this season, the Spartans defeated the Dolphins twice, and STAC leads the all-time series nine games to one.

The Dolphins are coming off a tough week which saw their playoff hopes dashed at the hand of Queens College before losing a pair of one-run games to the College of Saint Rose.  The Spartans played eight games last week winning six of them.  Most recently, they split a doubleheader against D'Youville on Thursday with each team winning a game 1-0.

For the first time this season, four Dolphins who have a qualifying number of at-bats are hitting above the .300 mark and the team batting average has climbed to .256 on the year.  The Dolphins are led in hitting by Anissa Acosta, who is in the midst of a hot streak at the plate, and Alyssa Acosta.  Both Mariah Carcano and Victoria Whalen are hitting above .300 as well.  In the circle, CSI's team ERA has climbed above six, and last time the Dolphins faced the Spartans CSI pitching surrendered 11 runs.

The Spartans have put up very similar numbers to CSI at the plate and come in hitting .253 as unit.  Three Spartans are hitting above the .300 mark led by Abbie Landrum at .321.  Sarah Williams and Elys Marcano are both hitting above .300 as well and Elian Raposo is just shy of that number at .298.  The strength of the Spartans continues to be their pitching staff as Charissa Della Vecchia and Landrum have pitcher to an ERA under 2.00.  Both have also logged over 110 innings and have combined to throw 28 complete games.

With four games remaining in conference play, the Dolphins will be eliminated from playoff contention with either a loss or one win each for Mercy College and Queens.  Mercy can lock up a playoff spot today with a win against D'Youville or a Dolphins loss.  Queens will also have an opportunity to clinch a postseason berth today with a Dolphins loss.
