GAMEDAY: SOFTBALL IN ACTION FOR THIRD STRAIGHT DAY AGAINST NEW HAVEN

4/5/2023 8:00:00 AM

West Haven, CT - The College of Staten Island Softball Team takes the field for the third straight day as they face the University of New Haven this afternoon at 2 PM.  The Dolphins enter today's games with a record of 10-20 on the season and the Chargers come in 7-18 on the year.  Today's matchup will be the first meeting between the two teams in the history of the two programs.

The Dolphins were in action for the second consecutive day yesterday as they faced Mercy College in conference play.  After a ten-run loss in game one, the Dolphins bounced back to pick up a 4-3 victory in game two behind a complete game effort from starter Alexandra Frenza.  The Chargers last played on Sunday when they split a pair of low-scoring games in conference play against St. Michael's College.

The Dolphins were led offensively by Aileen Balderas in yesterday's game two victory, but the team totaled just ten hits across the two games against the Mavericks.  Balderas and Avery Mochrie combined to account for four of those hits, but CSI's leading hitters, Mariah Carcano and Alyssa Acosta, each had at least one hit as well.  In the circle, the Dolphins struggled through game one ahead of the complete game effort from Frenza in game two.  CSI will hope to get longevity from their starter in both games today as the play for the third time in as many days.

The Chargers have given significant playing time to many players this season, but the offense is anchored by leading hitter Bella Chenet who comes in hitting .338.  Among qualifiers, she is the only Charger hitting above the .300 mark for a New Haven squad that is hitting .250 as a unit.  The New Haven pitching staff has pitched to 5.96 ERA with each of their top two starters coming in with a 5.60 ERA or greater.
