SOFTBALL SPLITS TWO THURSDAY OUTINGS AT THE SPRING GAMES

3/6/2025 10:00:00 PM

Clermont, FL – The College of Staten Island Softball Team split their two outings on Thursday at The Spring Games.  In their first game, the Dolphins held on in the closing innings to defeat Salem University, 4-3.  In their second game of the day, the Dolphins fell to Bemidji State University, 11-7.  With the Split, the Dolphins end the day 6-4 on the season and 4-4 during their Florida trip.

Game 1 vs Salem University
The Tigers jumped in front during the opening inning of CSI's first game of the day after a leadoff triple and RBI single plated the game's first run.  The score would remain 1-0 Salem until the third when the Dolphins took the lead for the first time.  An infield single opened the frame, but a caught stealing and ground out left the bases empty with two away.  This is where the two-out CSI rally started as Aileen Balderas singled before being doubled home by Anissa Acosta.  An Amanda Stalker base hit then put two in scoring position with two outs, and moments later, a wild pitch brought home the go-ahead run.

With CSI leading 2-1, Bridget Motley reached on an error to open the home fourth.  Aliveah Warner then tripled her home to make it 3-1, and Warner would eventually score on a fielder's choice ground ball to make it 4-1.  That score would stand until the sixth when the Tigers pulled to within one on a two-out, 2-RBI triple by Brooke Wise.  After CSI went down in order in the sixth, a two-out double would put the tying run in scoring position for the Tigers in the seventh.  However, Kennedie Ruth would escape stranding the tying run there as the Dolphins held on to win, 4-3.

Ruth earned her third victory of the season in her second complete game effort of the season.  She allowed three runs, all earned, on six hits, and struck out four.  Acosta and Stalker each had two hits in the game, and the Dolphins held an 8-6 advantage in hits for the game.

Game 2 vs Bemidji State University
For the second straight season the Dolphins and Beavers opened their matchup with a high-scoring first inning.  After the Dolphins scored twice, the Beavers answered with three runs in the home half of the inning.  BSU then extended their 3-2 lead in the second when a ground ball to right field was allowed to roll all the way to the fence by CSI.  This cleared the two Beavers baserunners and allowed the batter to score making it 6-2.  Another run came home later in the inning as well to make it 7-2, but the Dolphins would get two back in the bottom of the inning to make it 7-4.  The Beavers would break the game open with three more runs in the fourth, and the Dolphins would settle for just one in the fifth following an RBI single by Olivia Wanser.  The Beavers once again got that run back in the sixth, but the Dolphins would not go down quietly in the seventh.  Balderas homered to begin the inning, and the Dolphins would tack on another run on a Bridget Motley groundout.  This is where the CSI rally would end as the tying run never came to the plate in an 11-7 defeat.

The Dolphins will conclude their 10-game trip later today with matchups against Dominican University of NY and St. Cloud State University.
