College of Staten Island women's softball split Saturday's non-conference doubleheader with Rutgers-Newark. The Scarlet Raiders took game one with an 8-7 score while the Dolphins won the second game by a 5-1 score. CSI is now 7-5 overall while the Scarlet Raiders hold a 4-8 record.

An RBI-double by Monica Bagan put the Scarlet Raiders on the board to start the first inning. The Dolphins put themselves ahead 2-1 at the bottom half of the inning after Kristy Dillon scored on a wild pitch and Joanna Tepedino had a ground out RBI.

The Dolphins took advantage of a no scoring inning from Rutgers and added four runs themselves in the bottom of the second with the help of a Diana Stout single followed by a Flynn single and a Tepedino two-run triple.

Rutgers-Newark added one run at the top of the third inning as Jessica Zelaya homered to lead off. The Dolphins squeezed in a run at the bottom half of the inning off a Jen Volpe RBI triple to put the score at 7-2.

Though CSI finished scoring for the game, the Scarlet Raiders were just getting started. They tallied a run at the top of the fourth before adding four runs at the top of the fifth with an AJ Affholter two-run single and a Stacey Jacovinich two-run double to tie the game at seven.

The Dolphins missed their chance at the bottom of the sixth as they ended the inning with two runners on. Rutgers-Newark broke the tie at the top seventh with an RBI single by Gabby Spinella. Three easy outs at the bottom of the seventh for CSI gave Rutgers-Newark the win for game one.

Despite the loss, Danielle Ponsiglione pitched a complete game with three strikeouts. Tepedino had one hit with three RBI while Diana Stout had two hits and an RBI.

Katie Flynn began game two for CSI with a homer in the first inning. Rutgers scored their only run at the top of the third inning to tie with an RBI single up the middle by Carrie Wan.

The Dolphins proceeded to add one more at the bottom fourth as Michelle Ferraiuolo slammed a single to left to score Volpe for a 2-1 score.

CSI cushioned their lead by adding three more runs in the 6th inning. After Tepedino got on with a double, Stephanie Solari scored her with a single to left. Raechel Strobel followed with a two-run single up the middle.

In their last chance, the Scarlet Raiders left one runner on base to end the game.

Ferraiuolo took the win on the mound for CSI allowing just five hits. Solari totaled two hits and an RBI while Strobel had one hit and two RBI.

The Dolphins will travel to the Bronx on Monday, March 28 for a 3:30 pm doubleheader conference match up against Lehman College.
