CSI SOFTBALL ROLLS TO DH TRIUMPH OVER LEHMAN

CSI freshman Stephanie Solari tied a school-record with 6 RBI in Game 2 vs. Lehman.
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The College of Staten Island women's softball squad swept a CUNYAC doubleheader tilt against Lehman College, storming passed the Lightning, 13-1, and 28-1, in a twinbill played at South Field in the Bronx, New York, on Monday night. The wins marked CSI's seventh in their last eight games, and lifted the Dolphins to 9-5 overall and a perfect 4-0 in conference play. Lehman dipped to 2-4, 2-2, respectively.

CSI broke open a 2-1 contest in the third inning of game one, plating six runs in a third inning that featured an RBI-single by winning pitcher Danielle Ponsiglione and a two-RBI basehit by senior Jennifer Volpe. The story, however, was the total of five Lehman errors in the inning alone, part of seven total in the opening game. The scoring barrage was more than enough for Ponsiglione, who took the five-inning complete game win, yielding a lone run on four hits, fanning seven.

Katelyn Flynn was the powerful force at the plate, batting 3-for-4 with 3 RBI, including a two-RBI triple in the fifth inning, when the Dolphins plated five more runs. Ponsiglione netted the only other multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI.

Game two featured another hitting onslaught for the Dolphins, who registered 18 hits. The visitors were aided, however, with a total of 14 Lehman errors in the second game, the second-highest total in NCAA single game history.

Ironically, the Dolphins did a host of damage in the second inning without a Lehman error, as Raechel Strobel pasted a two-RBI single and Ponsiglione a two-RBI triple. Michelle Ferraiuolo also added an RBI single. One inning later, already up 8-1, CSI plated 11 runs on six hits with four Lehman errors. The inning was highlighted by an RBI-double from CSI frosh Stephanie Solari.

The Dolphins added six more runs with the help of six Lightning miscues in the fourth inning, and three more in the fifth to close things out. Ferraiuolo earned the win in the circle, tossing all five innings, allowing one run on two hits, striking out eight. Volpe tied a CSI record by scoring five runs in the game, becoming only the fourth CSI player to accomplish the feat and the first since 2006. Solari's six RBI also tied a school-record with three other Dolphins. As a team, CSI's 28 runs are the third-highest ever, and the most since scoring 29 against New York City College of Technology in 2004.

CSI's now has a long layoff, not playing again until April 7, when they host Montclair State University for a 3:30pm non-conference doubleheader.
