Box Score 2 The College of Staten Island women's softball team split a doubleheader this afternoon, falling 10-2 to visiting Farmingdale State before capturing a 4-3 win in the nightcap played at the CSI Softball Complex. The Dolphins are 10-16 overall after the games, while the Rams steadied to 22-10.
After a quiet first inning for both teams in the opener, the Rams struck first in their half of the second, as Jennifer Jarczynski belted a solo home run down the left field line that put the visitors up, 1-0. The Rams added another run in the top of the third inning off a sacrifice fly by Jarczynski to go up, and the Dolphins countered with a run in their bottom half of the third. Back-to-back hits to start the inning by
Victoria Procopio and
Maria Genovese got CSI started, and later, a fielder's choice RBI by
Brittany Smith, along with an error by the Rams catcher Jarczynski, cut the Rams lead to, 2-1.
The Dolphins tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the fourth inning with a
Victoria Procopio RBI double to deep left field that scored Christine DeCarlo, who walked earlier in the inning. The Rams would answer quickly in the top of the fifth with eight runs on seven hits and two Dolphin errors, highlighted by a two run double to left center by Michelle Mongiello that put the mercy rule in effect and gave the Rams a 10-2 edge. The Dolphins picked up two hits in their bottom half of the fifth but could not get a run across, thus ending the game after five innings by the same score.
Danielle Ponsiglione took the lost for the Dolphins, giving up 12 hits and 10 runs (9 earned) in five inning of work. Chelsea La Marca picks up the win, giving up only six hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out one.
In the late game, CSI exacted revenge in a tightly contested affair. The Dolphins touched Rams starter Taylor Tedeschi for two runs in the first. A sac fly by Solari scored
Brittany Smith, and later, with CSI's
Kaitlyn Flynn on third base, a wild pitch scored her to make it 2-0 after a frame. CSI starter Solari allowed her first run in the fourth, as Kristen Flint laced a two-out triple, and came home on a Lauren Nelson single. CSI got the run back, however, in their turn of the fourth, when
Caitlin O'Donnell came home from third via an infield error.
The game was a clean sheet from there until the final inning, as both teams used dramatics in the frame. Down 3-1 with no one on base and down to their final out, Farmingdale rallied. After back-to-back singles by Lisa Buoncasa and Hillary Genova, Rebecca Richman laced a two-RBI double to left-center, evening the game at 3-3. CSI was able to get out of the inning on the next at-bat, however as
Catherine Ebro gunned down Richman who was trying to steal third base.
With the score tied at three, CSI was down to their final at-bats and got the lead, and the win, back. Flynn led off with a single, and Solari followed with the same. The duo then stole second and third, and up stepped CSI's
Danielle Ponsiglione. The senior drilled a long fly ball to right field, deep enough to score Flynn, who tagged up from third base and raced in to score before the throw home could beat her, giving CSI the walk-off win.
Solari earned the win, tossing all seven innings, allowing three runs on eight hits, fanning a batter. Tedeschi allowed four runs (three earned) on 11 hits, fanning three. Flynn saw a 4-for-4 effort at the dish, scoring two runs including the game-winner.
CSI is back in action on Saturday afternoon at 12 Noon, when they host CUNYAC-rival Baruch College.
