CSI SOFTBALL STAYS PERFECT IN CUNYAC WITH DOUBLEHEADER SWEEP OF JOHN JAY

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Playing as the visiting team on its own field, the College of Staten Island softball squad scored a pair of victories today over CUNYAC-rivals John Jay College, keeping their perfect record alive in conference play. CSI won both games in five innings, taking the opener, 17-1, before a scoring a 10-0 shutout in the second. The Dolphins have now won six straight, lifting their overall record to 12-7, while extending to 6-0 in the CUNYAC. The Bloodhounds fell to 7-10-1, 4-6, respectively.

The Dolphins gave starting pitcher Victoria Procopio a sizable lead before she ever took the circle, exploding for five runs in the top of the first inning of the opener. Brittany Smith scored first after nabbing a bunt single, stealing second, and taking home on a throwing error by JJC pitcher Sara McKenna on the next hit ball by Procopio. Later, with the bases loaded, freshman Christina Tufano screamed a bases-clearing triple to right field. Danielle Locke then scored Tufano on a sac fly to complete the scoring for the inning, at 5-0.

After Procopio retired the Bloodhounds in order, the Dolphins then put the game virtually out of reach with an 11-run second inning, placing nine hits aided by a pair of Bloodhound errors. Procopio started the scoring carousel with an infield single that plated Chyanne Gilliam. Stefanie Solari, Maxine Jasko, and Tufano all then hit back-to-back RBI-singles before Locke then slammed a triple to the right-center gap, plating another pair of runs, making it 11-0. Samantha Tallerine followed up Locke's triple with one of her one, plating Locke, and then coming around to score herself on a Taylor Kaplan single. Gilliam, who earned on via a fielder's choice that erased Kaplan, then came in via an error, and later, a Procopio triple, would score Smith to finish the scoring, giving CSI a commanding 16-0 edge.

That proved more than enough for Procopio, who allowed a pair of base runners and one run, then yielded in time for Smith to toss the fourth and fifth inning. John Jay struck in their turn of the third via a Kalyssa Daley double that scored Jamie Lam. CSI responded for a final run in the fifth on a Jennie Hosty pinch-hit RBI-single that would score Tufano. CSI spread out 17 hits in the game, with Tufano leading the way with a 3-4 performance with four RBI and three runs scored.

CSI traded in the one monster inning for a more balanced attack in the second game, scoring in the first four innings to build a 10-0 advantage that would hold up and halt the game at five innings. The Dolphins one again gave the ball to Procopio to start the game, and took an early lead, this time using a Jasko single to score Solari, who started things off with a two-out double. In the second frame, CSI extended their lead after Tallerine singled home Locke, who started the frame off with a double. Later, a John Jay error allowed two more runs to cross for CSI and the Dolphins had a 3-0 lead.

In the third frame, another costly error for the Bloodhounds proved big. With Jasko at first base, Tufano hit another single to shallow right, but the ball skipped away from right fielder Leidy Lopera and all the way to the way, allowing Jasko and Tufano to score. The Bloodhounds would commit two more errors in the fourth, and coupled with a two-RBI single by Solari, CSI plated four runs in the inning to go up 10-0.

After Procopio pitched the first three frames, CSI again gave the ball to Smith, who despite allowing a pair of hits was able to wiggle out of the innings and preserve the win after five innings. CSI out-hit JJC, 12-3, in the second contest. Maxine Jasko went 3-3 at the dish with an RBI and two runs scored.

CSI will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, when they take on Drew University in a non-conference doubleheader at the CSI Softball Complex, beginning at 1pm.
