KEAN TOPPLES CSI SOFTBALL IN DOUBLEHEADER

Brittany Smith and the Dolphins could not muster up much offense in the loss
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 The College of Staten Island softball squad saw their five-game win streak snapped this afternoon, falling to Kean University in a non-conference doubleheader in Union, NJ.  Kean took the first game, 9-1, in a shortened six innings, then blanked the Dolphins, 6-0, in the second game of the doubleheader.  CSI fell to 5-4 with the losses, while the Cougars improved to 12-2.

Despite the lop-sided final score in game one, CSI actually took a 1-0 lead into the bottom of the fourth inning.  A Stefanie Solari RBI single scored Jacqueline Cautela to open the scoring in the third inning, and Cautela was in the circle working on the shutout before Kean answered back with two runs in the fourth frame.  Then, in the fifth, an RBI-double by Sarah Binkiewicz and a two-RBI single by Courtney Yard made it 5-1, and from there, the floodgates opened.  Kean added two markers in the sixth to win the game via mercy rule, 9-1.

Yard also picked up the win for Kean in the circle, allowing just the lone run on two hits, fanning 10.  The Cougars out-hit the Dolphins, 14-2, and CSI also committed a pair of errors.

Game two went the seven-inning distance but Kean led wire-to-wire, needing only the two runs it would score in the first inning to hold up for the game.  Kean starter Rebecca Rotola coasted, allowing just one Dolphin hit through the first six innings, while Stephanie Gilbert came on for an inning of relief to seal the game.  Victoria Procopio took the loss for the Dolphins, pitching six complete innings, giving up 6 runs (five earned) on 11 hits.  Kean out-hit CSI, 11-2, and CSI was also sloppy in the field with another three errors.

Kean, who defeated the Dolphins in the NCAA Division III National Tournament last year, has now won eight of the last 10 meetings, and hold a 12-4 all-time record against the Dolphins.

?CSI will be off tomorrow, but are back in action on Monday, hosting New Jersey City University for a doubleheader at 3:30pm.
